Automobili Lamborghini Esports Team Qualifies in Top 8 and takes Double Points Finish in Debut Race

Jordan Sherratt and Gianfranco Giglioli represented the Sant’Agata Bolognese brand in the SRO GTWC Esports Sprint Europe Pro class’s first round in Misano

Sant’Agata Bolognese, 8 April 2022 - Automobili Lamborghini Esports Team drivers Jordan Sherratt and Gianfranco Giglioli recorded a debut double points finish in the SRO Esports Sprint Europe Championship, the first event for the official factory Lamborghini entry in the Esports scene.

Coming into the event, Sherratt and Giglioli prepared with the support of Squadra Corse staff to hone the performance of their Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo throughout testing and official practice. The event started well with both drivers showing good pace in free practice while they held off making changes to their cars as the virtual track had yet to fully rubber in.

Qualifying showed a great performance from Sherratt to place in P8 in the Pro class, while Gianfranco was just two tenths of a second behind in P19.

As the lights went out for Lamborghini’s first ever factory team in Esports, Jordan made a superb start to run P6, capitalising on cars around him who took slightly longer to get their tyres into the operating window. Meanwhile Gianfranco was making moves to climb 5 positions until a small mistake early in the race saw lose the advantage he had worked hard to attain.

With the pit window open 15 minutes into the race, Jordan kept the pace in the top 6 but was given a 5s penalty for light contact early in the race which he would have to serve during the mandatory pitstop, meanwhile Gianfranco was setting a good pace trying to recover from the bottom of the top 20 of the bumper 47 car grid. Both cars pitted late on with about twenty minutes of the race remaining.

Sherratt lost some time in the pitlane with some light bodywork repairs which dropped him down the order, but a charging comeback from the South African saw him rise to take 11th at the flag and with it the first points for the team. Gianfranco meanwhile drove a strong race to take the final points paying position of P15 in the Pro class to cap off a solid debut weekend for the newborn Esports team.

Jordan, driver of car #63 commented, “I was very pleased to take 8th in qualifying as we were only a couple of tenths of pole, and it shows we did a super job for our first event together. I was extremely happy for a strong start to the race to run solidly in the top 6 until the penalty. The fact that with a bit more luck the potential was there for 6th makes me optimistic about the rest of the season and I am looking forward to putting in the work to take Lamborghini to the top step”.

Gianfranco, driver of car #97 shared “Honestly, I was hoping for a little bit more from qualifying, but I am happy because I have struggled a bit in testing in Misano so to be just a couple of tenths shy from Jordan, and 4 tenths from the pole was a good recovery. I couldn’t have hoped for more from the race start given I took 5 places, but my small mistake cost us the chance of a better result. Overall, I am delighted to score points on the team’s debut race, and I will work even harder for our next outing.”

Team Principal of Automobili Lamborghini Esports Dan Wells declared his satisfaction with the first event: “This is a new venture for Lamborghini, but we have worked very hard in the past few months to bring this project together and it was great to see a successful debut event. With thanks to our drivers, test drivers and engineers, we managed to tick a lot of boxes this week and we have identified some areas to work on for the coming events which is positive. We will keep pushing to get to the top step.”

The next round of the SRO Esports GT Europe takes place in Zandvoort on May 4th.

Jordan Sherratt, Gianfranco Giglioli and Giorgio Simonini will represent the Sant’Agata Bolognese brand in the SRO Esports championships

Sant’Agata Bolognese, 6 April 2022 - Strengthening its commitment to the Esports scene with a factory team, Lamborghini has unveiled the three sim drivers who will represent the brand during the 2022 season in international sim racing competitions.

Lamborghini decided to create its own official team to build on the valuable experience gained with The Real Race, the virtual one-make championship that debuted in 2020. The Esports Team represents a further opportunity to expand the brand’s presence in a sector that is constantly developing, highly competitive, and offers the chance to experience emotions comparable to those of a real race.

The three sim drivers chosen to represent the brand in the major international Esports competitions are Jordan Sherratt, Gianfranco Giglioli and Giorgio Simonini.

Sherratt, who was born in South Africa in 1999, earned his place on the Lamborghini Esports team thanks to his success in the latest edition of The Real Race, winning fifteen out of seventeen races and taking nine out of ten pole positions. The dominator of the second edition of the Lamborghini Esports championship for the EMEA region, who gained attention after his third place finish in 2020, is the perfect standard bearer for the team, both for the skills he has demonstrated in competition over the past two seasons and for being a huge fan of the Lamborghini brand.

“Being chosen by Lamborghini to be the Official Sim driver still feels like a dream,” commented Sherratt. “All the hard work and sacrifice I have put in behind the scenes have been recognised and I finally get to live my dream! I want to thank Lamborghini for putting their trust in me to represent their prestigious Brand.”

The second talent selected is Gianfranco Giglioli, a 24-year-old Italian-Venezuelan driver already well-established in the sim racing world. He was one of the first virtual drivers to take part in the Formula 1 Esports Series, finishing eighth in the inaugural season. In 2020 Giglioli placed fifth in the first edition of The Real Race, and that same year he won the Porsche Esports Carrera Cup Italia.

Completing the line-up is 22-year-old Italian sim driver Giorgio Simonini. His list of achievements includes first place in the Sim Grid World Cup 2020 and fourth place in the SRO Esports 2020 championship, results that make him one of the most promising drivers in virtual racing.

Sherratt and Giglioli will compete together in the GT World Challenge Esports Sprint Series Europe, and Simonini will join the pair to form the crew for the 2022 Intercontinental GT Challenge Esports Endurance Championship.

The Sprint calendar consists of five races and starts on April 6th with the Misano race. The last appointment is set for August 3rd, with the grand finale scheduled in the virtual version of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.

The Intercontinental GT Challenge Esports series kicks off on April 16th with the 12 Hours of Bathurst, the famous Australian endurance race. Here too there are five rounds on the calendar, with the competition concluding on August 27th with the 9 Hours of Kyalami.

Sherratt, Giglioli and Simonini have already started training to prepare for the first events on the calendar, sharing important information on driving and setup. The three sim drivers will be supported during the season by the Squadra Corse staff, who are dedicating a team principal, driver coach and engineers to the project to offer their expertise in the development and analysis of telemetry data, from the track to the virtual simulation.

Automobili Lamborghini’s Head of Motorsport Giorgio Sanna expressed his satisfaction with the launch of this exciting new project: “Sim racing is an important platform in today’s motorsport scene. Video games were born to allow those who didn’t have opportunities for real-life racing to impersonate the professional drivers. Now, after several decades of development in the industry, simulated racing is getting closer and closer to its real-life counterpart and now has nothing to envy from professional motorsport. Moreover, sim racing is an additional tool for us to develop some of the fundamental aspects of real racing, such as car setups and software applications that will play an important role in the future of our brand.”

Lamborghini has also confirmed the return of The Real Race for 2022. The dates of the third edition of the one-make Lamborghini Esports series will be announced in the coming weeks.

The dawn of the 2022 season of Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe brings new light for the Rexal FFF Racing Group. Dan Wells and his teammate Oscar Lee took part in the first round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe Championship, in the iconic scenery of the Autodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari Circuit. Among the kerbs of such a historical track, the Rexal FFF Racing Group ended the weekend in style, bringing home good results and identifying areas for further improvement.

In the Pro-AM Cup, Oscar Lee and Dan Wells caught a double podium thanks to two excellent performances. In Race 1 the #51 crew ended in 2nd place - 5th overall - while in Race 2 Lee and Wells achieved 3rd place. These results clearly show how fast this crew already is: the #51 crew has been capable to grab two trophies after the demanding Qualifying sessions, putting on a show during the whole race with a brilliant recovery full of brave overtakes.

After this positive start, the whole team is motivated and ready to push forward to the next round of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe 2022, which will take place at Paul Ricard (France) from 3 to 5 June.

Dan Wells – Driver Car 51

“It has been a good start to our program this year. Testing identified some areas we needed to work on as a team, but I was very pleased how the whole team performed throughout the busy race week. Although qualifying wasn’t ideal, we made the best of it and I am very proud of my teammate Oscar for his step forward this year and performance throughout the weekend as Imola can be a very challenging circuit. I am looking forward to the next event already!”

Giorgio Ferro – Team Manager
“It has been a very positive weekend for our team. The two podiums conquered by Dan Wells and Oscar Lee, always fast and consistent, are the well-deserved crowning of a great team work.

The whole team is motivated and ready to give everything to face this new season of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe in the best possible way.

Giorgio Ferro – Team Manager

“We are starting a new season in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe with two brand new Huracan ST Evo2 and with a reinforced and very close-knit team, always under the aegis of the main sponsor Rexal. After a wonderful 2021 season experienced together in continuous growth, we are happy to confirm the line-up formed by Luciano and Donovan Privitelio, who will certainly know how to treasure their skills acquired thanks to the collaboration with our coach Tonio Liuzzi. Our two gentlemen drivers will be joined this year, in the Pro-Am category, by a tested couple that already knows the Lamborghini Super Trofeo. We welcome Oscar and Dan, who represent a great added value of quality and experience for our whole team. Together we will face a sporting season that will certainly be challenging - given the usual high level of teams and drivers - but also enjoyable thanks to Lamborghini's wise direction.”

Dan Wells

"I am really pleased to have signed with FFF Racing for this year's Championship. I hope that we can build on what Oscar and I learned last year, where we built good momentum to win the last race of the season - Race 2 of the World Final. I am sure that the competition in Pro-Am this year will be just as fierce but I am relishing the opportunity. A big thanks to our partners and the team for their efforts to get this program up and running - I look forward to getting started on track."

Oscar Lee

"I am so happy to announce that I will be driving with FFF Racing for this year’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo European season. I am delighted to have an opportunity to work with one of the best teams in the industry - with their expansive wealth of knowledge in motorsport and prestige amongst the GT community, it gives me great confidence into the upcoming season. I can't wait until the first round at Imola!"
